My favourite theatre debuted a new event series last night. TPTB named it Suite Thursday, yes, because it occurs on Thursday evenings. The Suite refers to Plaza Suite, the name of the performance space in which the event occurs.
Last night, Sheldon Casavant performed. He is a magician with a penchant for sleight of hand. Sheldon’s magic was not Las Vegas glitz, which had been my fear. It was simply presented, arguably the most difficult form of magic. There was nothing to distract. Sheldon’s amazing, and amusing, skill was front and centre.
In an era of CGI, audiences can be blase, skeptical and difficult to surprise. Sheldon made us all feel 8 again, thrilled by the possibility. His patter was intelligent, entertaining and made the Nonagenarian smile for the entire performance.
I’ve heard rumours about the diversity of the programming of Suite Thursday. That’s another thing about the cabaret series I find compelling. I wonder who performs next week?
